The DOMA Ruling – A victory for progress.

I would be lying if I said there wasn’t some satisfaction in seeing all of these religious fanatics utterly devastated about the DOMA ruling today. Comments like “The DOMA ruling has now made the normalization of polygamy, pedophilia, incest and bestiality inevitable. Matter of time.” from American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer and statements that the “supreme court overruled god” are, in my opinion, POSITIVE things.

It’s positive in the fact that perhaps some believers will finally look at the people who represent them and see how ridiculous they sound, and question who they are associating themselves with.

It’s positive in the fact that the nation is moving past iron-age, bigoted worldviews that oppress others for no reason. It’s positive because there will be NO divine retaliation from their god who will supposedly be so pissed off because this goes against what he wants.

These people will have to disappear into the laughing-stock abyss and not be taken any more seriously than people who don’t think women should vote or that interracial couples should be allowed to marry.

It’s positive because it PROVES, along with the abolishing of slavery and women being treated equal, that we DO NOT GET OUR MORALS from an ancient book written by iron age men who thought the moon emitted its own light and the world was flat. We get them from being HUMAN – and need no ancient doctrines in order to live by.

Ancient books that encourage slavery.

Ancient books that encourage treating women as property.

Ancient books that encourage murder for what we now consider normal daily activities.

The fact that we no longer follow these archaic laws is proof that we do not need to get our morals from them. Proof we as a society transcend and move past iron-age morality.

My hope is that many people, as society progresses, are realizing there is no divine punishment for going against the words written by humans thousands of years ago. These ideas, and the people who hold them, are becoming obsolete and are slowly but surely – losing the fight.

The further and further society progresses, the less and less space is available for inequality, intolerance, and hate.

Long live freedom and equality. Rest in peace, ancient mythical morality.
