This New Grading Scale Will Make You Wish You Were Back In School

This is the new grading scale at Frayser Achievement in Tennessee, an elementary school as part of the ASD whose sole purpose is to bring the bottom 5% of schools in TN to the top 25%.
Well, where to begin?
I remember C’s being average, right? A, B, C, D, F. <— There it is, right in the middle! Average.
For our entire lives we’ve been taught that somewhere around 75% of your effort or correctness is “average” – anything above is better, and anything below that is worse. And, if you’re in the 50%’s or lower, you’re probably failing.
But, no more! Good news, future generations. If this grading system spreads, you will only have to be right 57-69% of the time in order to be “average.” And 84%, what I remember being a B- or a B, will land you an A.
This means, the kid who answers 84 out of 100 questions correctly, and the kid who answers 100 out of 100 questions correctly, will look identical on college applications.
Why would kids want to spend hours studying for an A if they could just coast by with 84% and still get the same grade?
Are kids now going to be learning that “average” is barely over half of your effort or success levels?
I see the goal they’re trying to achieve – but to me this looks like a slacker’s dream come true.

What are my thoughts? It’s Tennessee, one of the leaders in dumbing down America. This comes on the heals of Tennessee legislation to cut the welfare benefits of the poor if their children don’t raise their test scores.

Now, for my thoughts: this grading scale isn’t new to me nor people who may have studied or is studying outside of the US. I studied abroad in London at a uni where the scale is very similar. Getting a 65% is very good; anything above an 80%, you’re considered genius. In my experience, we were graded on either group work, an essay, and/or a final (usually comprehensive) exam. We had no homework/busywork and were graded on what I previously mentioned. Although this looks different to students (and people in general) in the US, this is the norm in the UK.
