Why You Shouldn’t Look Up Jennifer Lawrence’s Leaked Photos

So, someone hacked into the phones of a few celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Kim Kardashian, Vanessa Hudgens, and many others. Once in, they pulled some nude photos of the women and published them online.
Men everywhere, rejoice! Right?
Wrong.
What just happened here is the on the spectrum of most intimate in violations of human privacy. Photos taken on a personal device for personal reasons (whatever they may be), leaked to the world. Many people are giving the argument that there is no privacy when you are a celebrity or that “they shouldn’t have taken those photos anyway,” but they are missing one very important point in this whole conversation.
These people are human beings. I know, it’s a radical thought.
Jennifer Lawrence was born on August 15th, 1990. For the mathematicians out there, that makes her 24. 24 years old. She is younger than me by half a decade and likely younger than most of you who are reading this. She is a college-aged human being who is living her life in the spotlight, but that does not give anyone the right to violate her privacy.
But since they’re online anyway, you might as well look at them, right?
Wrong again.
The only reason people are compelled to perform illegal acts like this is because they know it’s going to generate buzz, website traffic, and subsequently – income. The only way for that to happen is for the general public to catch wind of what’s going on and follow the path to the photos. If none of this happened, there would be less and less reason to do it again. It’s like a comedian who repeatedly finds himself with a silent crowd, eventually he will probably get the hint and find a new career path.
Dare I say, each person who looks at these photos is part of the problem. Maybe that sounds a little harsh, but you are viewing images that were meant for one human being, taken by another human being, of the most intimate sort. I know it is a cliche argument, but if this was your girlfriend/mother/sister/wife, would you want people all over the world seeing the photos? I don’t think so.
Furthermore, it shows a blatant disregard for the respect deserved by these people – not because they are celebrities, but because they are human beings, just like you and I. They have chosen a career path that puts them in the public eye, but they still have the right to choose what people do and don’t see.
If you want to see a naked woman, either go find some pornography (there are plenty of consensual nude photos floating around online) or actually try making enough of a connection with a woman that you become intimate with her. That might be a nice change of pace.
I know, it’s the “forbidden fruit,” any adult film star can plaster nude photos of themselves online but you have been just dying to see what’s under Jennifer Lawrence’s dress! Well, too bad my friend – just like the woman next to you on the subway, she has no obligation to show you, or anyone else she doesn’t want to.
One last fact – if you are one of the many who is rightfully creeped out about what someone had to go through in order to obtain these photos, consider this: Actress/Singer Mary Winstead tweeted that the photos of her that were leaked were taken with her husband in private and had been deleted years ago. Now think about what really had to go into accessing them. Creepy to the highest degree.

While I agree with you on a certain degree, let us not forget that said celebrity, or any celebrity for that matter, took those pictures on an unsecured networked device.
I’m not saying that gives permission to anyone to compromise said device and obtain/distribute them, but if you want something to be kept secret, keep it off your phone, take some measures to prevent a leak. We can only be as secure as we try to be.
Now, to the person who actually did the gathering and distribution of these photos; nothing can be said. Humankind is cruel, and will jump at the opportunity to get even a little bit of something out of someone else’s misery.
Whatever the case may be, it’s done. Her photos are online, just as any other celebrity’s photos. And just like any other celebrity, she has to get over it and keep on. It’s not an easy thing to do, but she will have to do it.
What actually makes me sad is, the shitstorm began because it’s Jennifer Lawrence, while at the same time we have many leaked nude photos of many other celebrities, but no one seems to give a shit.

Brilliant philosophy and I totally agree with you. I honestly had never thought that anyone searching for these images is as much of the problem as is the person that hacked the devices, but it’s true. If we all stopped wanting to see the salacious, then it wouldn’t be as common for these images to presented online for people to be titillated by. And at 24 I did ‘stupid’ or questionable things as well. Heavens I wouldn’t have wanted any of those things I did out in the public spectrum.

I’m taking a huge risk replying to this, seeing the rather juvenile replies this post has had already, but here goes:
You’re right about the privacy issue. It’s funny, some of the same people who will join picket lines against NSA spying (which, incidentally, has been shown to be out of control and more than a little wrong) will download JLaw nudes without a second thought.
Now, about the issue of what, exactly got hacked: I’ve been hearing that it’s ICloud servers that got hacked, not individual phones. Personal bias: I have not trusted the “Cloud” servers– any of them– from the get-go. When I bought this laptop it came with the ability to back up all my files to HP’s cloud servers. Nothing doing, not gonna happen. I don’t trust the cloud even a little bit, and wouldn’t put anything there that I wouldn’t put on my blog for public viewing. My backups are on thumb-drives, which are still not entirely safe– such things can easily be lost or stolen– but they are, at least at this time, still exclusively under my control here.
If you want to take nude photos of yourself, have at it. But, save the nudes to off-line storage– such as thumb drives– that you control. Don’t put it on the cloud, and on the off chance that phones were indeed hacked don’t leave anything sensitive on your phone.
Quickie reply to my own reply: I notice, James, that you didn’t have any filtering set up. My reply got posted immediately last night, with no moderation even though it was my first post on your blog. That’s a wee bit unusual, and it’s not hard to see why everybody else– including me– has moderation of some sort for first-time posters. I applaud you. Simply put, I have a high level of respect for you and what you post on your blog(s). I happen to agree with your views, regardless of what my other human peers might think. It is not right that this occurred. To anyone, even a celebrity. Now, we all know the warnings that aren’t written, but that come with the use of electronic devices. EVERYONE, has something called “common sense”. And as such, we should use it. (When you take a picture, SOMEONE MAY see it. Or get access to it. When you do something, SOMEONE MAY find out! That’s totally not an issue here.) But, we also all know that we don’t usually think everything through. Did she put those pictures in a place that should have been secure? Yes. Did she ever think this could happen? Probably not. Regardless though… This is an atrocious breach of privacy, and no matter if the person in question knew or not this could happen or even cared; it wasn’t HER fault! People who think that it was, and blame her, are only seeing half the battle. I think that the person who should be receiving all this “hate”, not you, Jennifer, or anyone else, is the person responsible for this horrifying act.
You’re correct when you say that she is a human being. She is, just like all of us. And no self-respecting human being with an ounce of compassion and sense in them, would ever do something like this. I am a rather young man, and my experience is not very large in categories like this. But, I have a very high set of standards and morals, and this goes against every single one of the ones that I have. I would hazard a guess that if it was any of us, or our loved ones, whose photos were leaked to the internet, we would be clamoring for someone to come to our defense too. We would want someone to tell everyone what you’ve just said. Someone to act and take out what it is that distresses us so.
So, for all of you who think that this man, JMS, is getting attention or is less of a man because of what he has said in this or any of his posts, you may need to get a reality check. There are few people on the face of this earth who can throw a stone at JMS, and those of you who are, should probably look at yourselves and what you have said once- or even twice- more. I want to start by saying that I respect your view points. Your argument is well presented, but it’s fraudulent.
Certainly, I agree that these women are “human beings,” and that regardless of the fact that they are celebrities they feel the same emotions as ordinary people, such as embarrassment, and an emotion that you don’t completely take into account in your argument, regret.
Two months ago, long before this leak occurred, imagine I said to you, “hey dude, did you know that people hack into people phones and computers and steal their personal data, including passwords and intimate photos?” Would you give a confirmation to that question? Certainly you would. This isn’t the first time this has happened. People know that there is a possibility that the photos they take of their most intimate moments can be disseminated through the method aforementioned or some other nefarious means. If you deny the existence of this possibility or don’t take it into account when you or other people participate in these activities, whether you are a celebrity or not, you are divorced from reality. And any attempt to shame people for viewing these photos by either you or the celebs themselves is blatant naivety. People know these risks, and I say this with extreme emphasis, that’s why they don’t take nude photos!! You mentioned my mother, my sister, or my girlfriend. They are smarter than that. If my girlfriend wanted to show me something, she would just do it.
Are they victims? Certainly. They are victims of the hacker/s. They are victims of large technology companies like Google and Apple, who unbeknownst to us, pool all our private data. Where is their blame? One can even argue that they are victims of their own vanity. But to claim that people who look at these photos are the perpetrators is a ridiculous assertion.
I respect women just as much as you do, but sometimes women have to have respect for themselves.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to see it. Invasion of privacy is like rape through a veil. I think it’s just as heinous. Someone very close got a hold of the entire collection of leaked pictures, saved JLaw’s and shared them with me. It became another trigger for my emotions that have been on this roller coaster of a ride of grey, where I am just feeling my way towards full circle of this relationship that is not a relationship.

I didn’t look up the photos simply because I don’t find her attractive or interesting. Also, maybe I’ve been living in Europe so long that my views on this have changed, but I honestly don’t care. The only thing I find fascinating about all this is all the blowback from people like you.
All these retarded statements, like:

“You can’t tell young people not to take nude selfies, that’s like abstinence and we all know how effective that is”
I know those 2 weren’t yours, but they were 2 of the stupider ones I came accross. Anyway, in response to your respect argument, I have respect for those who accomplish something meaningful – I respect Stephen Hawking. I have respect for those who stand up to tyranny or evil – I respect Malala Yousafzai. I don’t automatically respect actors/actresses who store porn of themselves on their phones. I might respect them for something else, like if Robert DeNiro’s nude selfies came out (:-D I’m sure everyone would be clamouring for those) I would still respect him just as much as I do now – hell, in his case I might even make an exception and I’d respect him more.
The reason this is such a big deal for the world is because we put sex and nudity on a pedestal, then we go about thinking that every celebrity shouldn’t be a part of that pedestal, if we didn’t pay as much attention to Hollywood and the media and went about our own lives trying to figure out ways to become a part of that inner circle (instead of invading the privacy of those whom are a part of the limelight) then maybe it wouldn’t explode like it has. I agree humans have their rights and it is a blatant breach of privacy but, if you don’t want something to happen don’t create the steps necessary for it to do so, its quite simple. say no or give it little to no thought.
Think about this way (and I understand her age group and her lifestyle) i’m not a celebrity, yet if i were I sure as hell would not be taking nude pictures of myself in fear that I may get hacked, its not the clouds fault this has been happening long before the cloud’s conception, so it is no surprise that this happened. when you’re a part of that crowd you’re constantly being barraged by papparazzi, hackers, and scam artists. just because of your fame and fortune, everyone wants a piece and there isn’t enough of you to go around, so make enough of you to go around.
Back to my original point, if we just allowed things like this to happen on a regular basis would it not get old “sex’ would quickly become a thing of the past if celebrities just bared it all, its not like they’re ugly they could get away with it and make money doing so, think about Lindsay Lohan she has done nude shoots with Playboy at least three times (maybe not as herself) sure it was all the rage back in 2011, now you hardly hear about it, why? because she wasn’t afraid to, she didn’t get angry and start filing lawsuits she just went with it and I respect her so much more for that. not to mention she made millions on one photo shoot alone, because she’s a celebrity and she signed a contract.
Japan and Europe do that frequently many of their celebrities (at their own will) sign up to be in skin flicks and photo shoots and they make money, because “sex” is not shunned its a part of life, just like death. once everyone starts seeing it that way it won’t be such a big deal.
I’m an artist I may not be Famous but, when I was around the age of 15 I started drawing nude women, I have been since because, I believe the nude female figure is beautiful and erotic, not sinful, not wrong… Beautiful.
P.S. I’ve seen the photos. does it make me a bad person? no, its simple curiosity.
would I ask a celebrity to take of her clothes upon meeting her, no. that would make someone very uncomfortable, maybe if I knew them on a more personal level I would but, that is a whole other ballgame 😉
Although you make a good and thoughtful comment, it´s just that you say that we should see every celebrity naked and that they should be OK with it.. I´m pretty sure that’s not way many have worked hard to get famous..
And understand that Japan, Europe and North America have very different´t cultures.. And even if it seams harmless that celebrity’s post naked, by will or not for the public it can actually be quit harmful.. Women are frequently portrayed as sexual objects in ADs, mags, TV and so on and so on.. But not men. So we see whole or half naked women all time, every day. And still when women in a celebrity statues get leaked photos or posted publicly by will, it get hell of a fuss! Have you ever heard of leaked photos of a celebrity men gone wirl?? Even if you have, I don´t recound that you see it as often and that have been as mutch of a fuss about it? And I doubt that is because celebrity men don´t post naked for public or private photos.
Still think that more celebrity women should post naked..?
I live in Europe and I can honestly say that is just a such big deal hear as it is in North America..
And I mean, if you haked into your hot neighbor next doors computer or cellphone and printed out a bunch of naked photos of her on flyers to put around the block or the stairwell. She woulden´t get that happy, right.?
