One of the things that makes life so fulfilling, is the people we encounter and build relationships with along the way. Any sort of relationship, from a simple chat with our daily mail carrier – to the first meeting of our future spouse, can give us either a moment or a lifetime of happiness.

It can easily be argued that even the most personally fulfilling accomplishment will lose its luster if we don’t have a loved one to share it with. A family member, a friend, or a significant other. These are the people who make our short time on earth here worthwhile.

On the flip side though, we have all met the type of person who literally drains us of our energy. The type who is always finding (or creating) something to complain about. These people serve as a virus to our happiness and can easily destroy it, if we let them.

The problem is that many people are unaware of their ability to cut these people out of their lives. It’s easy to get comfortable, develop attachments, and really not see the damage that their negativity is doing to your life. You may begin to think that there is something wrong with you, perhaps depression, less self-worth, a lack of motivation, or less enjoyment from things you used to love doing.

The wrong people will make you question what you, yourself, are capable of. It’s important to realize the weight they can put on your shoulders, and that these feelings are not coming from within.

Not all of these situations are extreme in the sense of emotional or verbal abuse, but even something as small as discouraging you from pursuing your dreams, making you feel as though you’re not good enough, generally dragging down your morale, etc., can drastically deplete your chances for success and happiness.

right

The right people will motivate you to become the absolute best version of yourself, without changing who you really are…just by being around you. The right people will be pursuing their own dreams and therefore believe it is possible – so they will encourage you to follow your own; even if they don’t have to say anything to do it.

The right people will be standing next to you not only on the sunny days, but also on the rainy days. In fact, they’ll be the ones holding the umbrella over you.

It’s not just about finding the right people to be around – it’s also about BEING the right person to be around.

Each of us has a limited amount of time here on this earth, and the only truly lasting things that continue after we are gone, are the stories and memories of our existence in the minds of others. The stories told that really matter aren’t going to be about the kind of car you drove, the type of watch you wore, or whether or not your shoes had red bottoms.

They will be about your moral fiber, how you treated those around you, and how you chose to live your life to the absolute fullest.

Your ability to create the most positive, powerful legacy possible, will have much to do with the people you chose to surround yourself with on a daily basis. Choose wisely.

It is so amazing, when I think back, how I thought it was completely normal, being surrounded by people who constantly tried to pull me down and hold me back. I didn’t know it was happening, it was just that common in my life. Now I’m free of that, for the last 2.5 years (out of my 43 on this planet) I see what an uphill battle it made everything. This has made me try, perhaps too hard, to get others to see the truth of their own abilities to take their own lives back into their own hands. Some people just seem to find living in the muck comforting, like the old sweater they hate, but still cling to, because it’s theirs.

Only if you have intellect. This guy say you should keep people around you that will not tell you that you are going off a cliff. Ignorance is bliss

I totally agree, i have a lot of experience having the ‘parasites’ around me and being one myself, but i don’t think that cutting some relationships off is necessarily the wisest thing to do. Sometimes the negative ones are your actual family.. Instead of burning bridges we should try to be generous and turn the troublemakers into having more confidence and higher self esteem too. After all, the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. And that’s the challenge.

Ive tried to not burn bridges and hell these people to find their way and look at things from different perspective. But some people are just so negative, knocking some new perspective into em is like trying to dilute a solid rock, and its just draining. It eats you inside out without you even realizing. The best way is to just ignore these people for the goodness of good. If they are families, its totally a different stories.

Treat people in the manner that you want them to treat YOU in return.
    Courtesy begins with YOU.

    Dear mister Sama:

With heavy heart I come to your blog today after being alerted by a fellow photographer who knows my work and warned me, to find one of my copyright protected images (set with All Rights Reserved) used in this article, not only without my permission but what’s worse even without crediting my name or the source of the photograph.

The original image, from 2008, can be found here:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/sionfullana/3027919395/

I quote yourself from your own bio:
“I am a Secular Humanist, a believer in human equality and fairness. I fight for what’s right no matter how unpopular it may make me.”.

Well, if you truly want to be honest with that description, you know you’re not only being unfair in this situation, but also violating copyright laws, and I expect you to do the right/fair thing about it. Considering the level of traffic your posts have, there’s a fair case for seeking compensation for an authorized usage and copyright theft. But I would love to take the high road and offer you the chance to settle it with a usage fee. I hope you contact me about it. I’ll email you a copy of this post.

As you may see in the link I provide below, this is not my first run in having work stolen, and having some social media viral coverage about it, that led to the infringing company to pay compensation:

    http://thenextweb.com/socialmedia/2012/04/22/how-not-to-run-an-instagram-account-vogue-spain-caught-stealing-from-well-known-street-photographer/

So I would hope we can reach an amiable solution.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Best,

    SION FULLANA.

      Hi Sion,

I’m happy to remove this image for you – I found it on a Tumblr page, unsourced, and used it for my article. I deeply apologize for use of your copyrighted image.

I don’t make any money off of this blog, I simply use photos on Tumblr and similar websites that have already been shared to increase the visual value of my articles.

I am removing and replacing the image now – thank you for reaching out and I appreciate your understanding.

      Best,

      – James

Thank you for your reply and your explanation on Twitter. Thankfully, this serves as a chance for we all to do the right thing and respect everyone’s work. 🙂

        All the best,
        Sion

It’s inevitable when you realize that the people who holds you back and bogs you down are family members whom you live with. Being asian and the cultural values we hold, cutting ties or isolating them is not exactly an option. It really comes down to mental and emotional strength to pull yourself through. Also i believe everyone has times where they hit rock bottom, and as a friend it is important to be there to try help them stand again. I have met such friends and i was once such a friend. I could tell who withdrew themselves from me and who stood by me. And knowing that these people love and care for me, it made me determined to snap out of whatever sorry state that i was in.

Being on earth, what legacy you want o leave behind. In life you have choices, true friends will know the real you. Not pinpoint on your temporal actions.
Love life and cut ties from people who are not supportive of your dreams and vision. Embrace love and positive thinking. I was wondering in the wilderness for many years. Glad I am moving forward.
Thankful for the life lessons, the people that hurt you are teachers.
